Green Chalcedony

Chalcedony (pronounced KAL-sid-nee) is one of my favorite stones to work with.  Naturally occuring, it’s a milky-purple-hued stone with a semi-translucent quality.  It is this hint of translucency that really makes it a spectacular stone.  Because it is not quite fully transparent, the stone appears to glow when worn close to the skin.

I first fell in love with chalcedony when I saw it in turquoise/aqua hue when I first began designing jewelry.  It reminded me of a tropical sea–I couldn’t get enough of it.  I’ve since found it in a rainbow of shades from tangerine to hot pink, but the turquoise had always remained my preference…until very recently.

I came across Green Chalcedony, somewhat accidentally, when I was searching for another green stone, chrysoprase, a client had requested.  My jaw dropped when I first saw this stone.  Not only was the color deep and rich, but the rectangular, unfaceted cut of the stone displayed its translucent qualities like nothing I had ever seen before.

This stone was destined to become the Green Earth Earrings–featured this week in People Magazine!
