Photo Shoot with Don Miller

by elyse / 10 09 08

I spent three days with photographer Donald Miller in his Los Angeles studio photographing the entire new line of Elephant Heart jewelry.

Don is a commercial photographer specializing in action-packed and often surreal images for advertising and editorial publications. He’s done laps across the Sahara, sailed half-way around the world and still has time to help his young son build an entire city out of Legos!

Don and his team built a special set just for photographing my jewelry. He lit each piece from top to bottom and then came in with reflectors to put just the right sparkle on each stone.

It was my job to style each piece. Donned in white gloves to keep my fingerprints from altering the reflective quality of the jewelry, I shaped the way each piece was laid out. I was surprised to find that the designing doesn’t stop once the jewelry is made–the way a piece is presented and photographed is just as important. After positioning each piece by hand, I would choose from a selection of make-up brushes, paint brushes, toothpicks and tweezers to perfect the curve and angle of each bead and length of chain.

The camera–a professional grade digital–was connected directly to a computer with duel monitors. Josh Reed, a highly skilled digital tech, manned the computer and was able to correct the exposure of each image or tweak its color as soon as the shutter released. Josh was even able to control the camera with the computer and he would fire the shutter with the click of a key.

The strangest part was getting used to the photographer not being behind the camera. After I finished styling each piece, I would come out from under the lights to see Don and Josh waiting by the computer to take the image and see the results–amazing.

The shoot was exhausting, but a lot of fun and a fantastic learning experience.

New York project

by elyse / 10 07 08

As I was leaving for the airport last Thursday on my way to New York City, a friend stopped me to give me a traveling gift. I was a little confused at first by this gift that she called Traveling Tzedakah–Traveling Charity in English. Tzedakah is a Hebrew word for charity. She shared her family’s tradition of giving a small amount of money to a traveler upon their departure so that that person might be able to share their good fortune, bring someone joy, or do some good work while away.

I spent a good portion of my cross-country flight pondering what I might be able to do with this gift while in New York. I thought about the art I would see and the artists I could help–many of them friends just starting their careers. I thought about all the students just beginning their fall semester. I thought about the Fall and the change in weather; I could help someone in need of some warmer clothes. Perhaps it was all the newspaper headlines I had glanced at and magazine covers I had passed as I walked through the terminal in LA, but my thoughts kept falling back to Wall Street–the epicenter of the recent financial crisis.

The Elephant Heart Story

by elyse / 09 18 08

Growing up in Southern California, I have always been surrounded by an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables year round. The first house I lived in was on land that used to be an orchard, so the house was bordered by orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees. It wasn’t until I moved to Providence, RI to attend Brown University that I first experienced “the seasons” and most importantly the growing seasons. At first I was somewhat shocked and appalled that I wasn’t able to find strawberries or peaches in February on the East Coast, but then, slowly, I came to appreciate apples in the Fall, artichokes and cabbage in the Winter, and cherries in Spring. These fruits and vegetables became something to look forward to, to anticipate and then savor.

Now that I am back in California, I once again find that there is not much to want for as far as fresh produce is concerned. Now more than before with raspberries from Chile and kiwi from New Zealand, I can find any fruit I crave, any time of the year–with one exception, the elephant heart plum!

Photo shoot: behind the scenes

by elyse / 09 17 08

I recently styled a photo shoot for Elephant Heart jewelry. I worked with three lovely models, close friends, and real people, Nancy, an author, Danielle, a fashion marketing exec., and Shauna, a singer-songwriter

A lot of hard work and many hands went into the success of the shoot. I worked with photographer Bill Aron and his assistant Alexis at Bill’s Los Angeles studio. Hair and make-up were the skilled creation of Pam, a make-up artist for TV shows including It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Each model had a number of wardrobe changes and with each change, Pam worked with a whole new palate of complementary make-up.

Bill and Alexis adjusted the lighting in the studio and used shiny reflectors to ensure that the light was angled at the models and the jewelry in just the right way.

I designed each combination of jewelry worn by the models. As I dressed the models in the jewelry, I made sure each piece was tangle-free and hanging perfectly.

The shoot was a lot of work, but a lot of fun as well and no one had to force a smile.

Check out the slide show to see what went on in front of and behind the camera!
